At its core, investigative journalists and filmmakers whose work is inspired by the investigative instinct are motivated to expose a truth otherwise concealed from public view. These truths, more often than not, shed light on a significant injustice such as criminal misconduct in the police force, or off-shore tax havens for the wealthy. Both in print and on screen, investigative works are committed to tackling the question of what is being concealed; what is the lie? But we seldom pause to ask, why do we lie? Filmmaker Yael Melamede of (DIS)HONESTY: THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES and creator of “The Truth Box” explores this question through the lens of behavioral science, and uncovers some unexpected truths about why we lie.
